This customized home effectively maximizes the buildable area on this standard sized Vancouver lot. The corner lot presents the challenge of designing two prominent building facades while maintaining a controlled budget. The massing of the house with it’s offset roof pitches is a tribute to the highly popular massing developed in the early 50’s through to the 80’s as seen with the proliferation of the ‘Vancouver Special’.

The Vancouver Special form was developed and gained mass appeal due to its low cost of construction and its structural ability to create wide open spaces beneath.

As achieved with our design, the space that is created within this form are open and airy all within a relatively simple structure. By exaggerating the roof pitches and creating movement in the building facade we are exploring this pragmatic form.
